What to Do When Kids Ministry Feels Hard

If you’re leading in kids ministry right now, you’ve probably felt it.

Kids are distracted.
Families are busy.
Attendance is inconsistent.

And if you’re honest…
it can feel like nothing is working.
You’re not alone in feeling this.

After more than 20 years in kids ministry, I want to tell you something clearly:
You’re not doing it wrong.

Why Kids Ministry Feels Hard Right Now

Kids ministry has always required faith, but right now it also requires patience.
We’re leading in a time where:

  • schedules are full

  • attention spans are short

  • consistency is rare

And when attendance fluctuates or kids don’t seem engaged, it’s easy to wonder if what you’re doing is making a difference.

The Truth We Often Forget

But here’s the truth:
You are planting seeds you may not see grow yet.

Every lesson matters.
Every conversation matters.
Every prayer matters.

Nothing you do in obedience to God is wasted.

What’s Really Happening Beneath the Surface

Growth in kids’ lives doesn’t always show up immediately.
Sometimes:

  • the lesson clicks months later

  • the prayer gets remembered years later

  • the truth takes root slowly

God is doing more than you can measure.
Even when it feels quiet.
Even when it feels unseen.

Don’t Quit

If you’re tired…
if you’re discouraged…
if you’re wondering if it’s working—

Don’t quit.
What you’re building matters.

You are helping shape faith that will last a lifetime.
And that is never small.

A Verse and Prayer for When It Feels Hard

“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” — Galatians 6:9

Jesus,
Thank You for the opportunity to invest in the lives of kids.
When it feels hard, remind me that nothing done for You is wasted.

Help me to stay faithful in the small moments—
the lessons, the conversations, the prayers.

When I feel discouraged, give me perspective.
When I feel tired, give me strength.
And when I can’t see the impact, help me trust that You are working.

Thank You that You are doing more than I can measure.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

You’re doing more than you can see. Keep going! ❤️
