How to Teach Kids Faith That Moves Mountains

One of the most beautiful things about children is their ability to believe.

Kids naturally believe that anything is possible. They dream big, trust easily, and imagine boldly. But as they grow, they also begin to face situations that feel too big, too hard, or too scary.

That’s where faith becomes so important.

As parents, grandparents, and ministry leaders, we have the opportunity to help children understand that faith isn’t just a church word — it’s something real that can guide them through everyday life.

Jesus said in Matthew 17:20:

“If you have faith as small as a mustard seed… nothing will be impossible for you.”

Helping kids understand this truth doesn’t require complicated lessons. Often, the most powerful way to teach faith is through simple moments and meaningful conversations.

Here are a few ways families can begin teaching kids about faith that moves mountains.

1. Talk About Faith in Everyday Moments

Children learn best through everyday experiences.

When something difficult happens — a hard day at school, a challenge with a friend, or something that feels scary — it becomes an opportunity to talk about trusting God.

Instead of only discussing faith at church or during formal devotion time, try asking simple questions like:

• What do you think God wants us to do in this situation?
• How can we trust God when things feel hard?
• What would it look like to have faith right now?

These small conversations help children see that faith is something they can practice in real life.

2. Read Stories That Show Faith in Action

Stories are one of the most powerful ways to teach children spiritual truths.

When kids hear stories about characters who trust God, it helps them imagine what faith can look like in their own lives.

The Bible is full of these stories — David facing Goliath, Daniel trusting God in the lions’ den, and Gideon discovering that God can use ordinary people in powerful ways.

But stories in children’s books can also help kids connect with these ideas in a simple and relatable way.

3. Help Kids See That Faith Can Start Small

One of the most important things children can learn is that faith doesn’t have to be big to matter.

Jesus compared faith to a mustard seed — one of the smallest seeds imaginable.

That means even a small step of trust can be powerful.

Encourage kids when they pray, trust God, or try to believe in a difficult moment. Those small steps help build a lifelong foundation of faith.

4. Use Questions to Start Faith Conversations

Sometimes the best way to teach faith is simply by asking questions.

After reading a Bible story or a faith-based book together, you might ask:

• What part of this story stood out to you?
• What do you think the characters learned about trusting God?
• Have you ever had a moment where you needed faith like that?

These conversations help children connect what they hear with their own experiences.

A Story That Helps Kids Understand Faith

One of the reasons I wrote the children's book Move Over was to help kids understand what faith looks like when something feels too big to move.

In the story, a family of animals are on their way to a party when a mountain blocks their path. Along the way they discover that God has given each of them something small that can do BIG things — faith.

The story was inspired by a real experience in my own life where I had to learn what it meant to trust God when something felt impossible.

Stories like this can open the door for meaningful conversations with kids about believing God, even when the answer doesn’t come right away.

Faith Grows One Conversation at a Time

Teaching kids faith that moves mountains doesn’t happen in one lesson or one moment.

It happens through everyday conversations, simple prayers, meaningful stories, and moments where we remind children that God is always at work — even when we can't see it yet.

When we help kids learn to trust God early in life, we are giving them something that will guide them for the rest of their journey.

And sometimes, that faith really can move mountains.
